20 (ish) Thailand Canon Events You Can’t Avoid
If you’re in Thailand long enough, eventually, the plot will find you.
You can have the perfect itinerary, download every recommended app, learn a few Thai phrases, and swear you're going to avoid all the classic tourist mistakes.
Doesn't matter.
Thailand is going to humble you eventually.
Some of these things are unavoidable. Some are questionable. Some are entirely your own fault. And some will have you sitting there thinking, “How the hell did I end up here?”
These are the Thailand canon events — the weird, chaotic, hilarious little experiences that almost every traveler seems to collect along the way.
So if you're heading to Thailand, consider this your unofficial checklist. Here are 20 Thailand canon events you probably won't escape.
1. Elephant pants
You can try to resist them. You can tell yourself you’re not that tourist. You can walk past the elephant pants at every market like you have standards.
And then suddenly you’re wearing them. Just about every day.
2. Waiting way too long to learn the language
You tell yourself you’re going to learn Thai before your trip. Then you arrive and realize you can survive perfectly well with “sawasdee,” “khop khun,” “mai pen rai,” and pointing.
Three months later, you still know approximately 14 words.
In a lot of tourist towns, you're spoiled by Thai people speaking just enough English to get by. And at some point you will realize you’ve been saying “khop khun ka” with the confidence of a fluent speaker and absolutely no idea what anyone around you is saying.
3. Been told the Grand Palace is closed and taken to a tailor shop
You’re walking toward the Grand Palace when a very friendly stranger suddenly informs you that it’s closed today.Oh no!
Luckily, he knows about a very special temple that you should visit instead.
And there just happens to be a tailor shop along the way.
This is not your first rodeo. You are being scammed. But if you needed a suit anyway, uno reverse mofos.
4. Ripped off at a karaoke bar
You go out for what you think will be a fun, harmless night of karaoke (s/o men). You sing. You drink. You have the time of your life with a bunch of beautiful Thai girls giving you more attention than you’ve ever had.
Then the bill arrives and suddenly you’re doing mental math in a state of complete panic wondering how four drinks and a few songs somehow cost the equivalent to your flight ticket here. You end up paying the bill and saying that you’ll report it…. IYKYK.
5. Ridden in a tuk tuk
At some point, you have to do it.
Yes, you know a Grab is cheaper. Yes, you know you’re probably paying the tourist price. Yes, you know there are approximately 47 reasons people told you not to.
But you’re in Thailand.
Get in the tuk tuk!!! I still do sometimes :)
6a. A squat toilet
You can spend thousands of dollars planning the perfect Thailand vacation and somehow the moment that stays with you forever will be the first time you encounter a squat toilet. You are shell shocked tbh.
You’ll stare at it.
It’ll stare back.
And suddenly you’re questioning every decision that led you there.
6b. THEN, you realize the bathroom has a hose instead of toilet paper :/
You stare at it for a second. You know what it’s for. You just don’t know if you’re emotionally prepared for it.
Welcome to your baptism.
7. Given a 1,000 baht note instead of 100
You hand over what you think is a 100 baht note.
The cashier gives you change.
You walk away.
Then you realize you just handed someone 1,000 baht and maybe they corrected you… maybe not.
Congratulations. You’ve just learned that the 100 and 1,000 baht notes are apparently designed to cause problems.
8. Held on around your Grab driver’s waist
At some point, your Grab driver will show up on a motorbike.
You’ll look at the tiny seat behind the driver.
You’ll look at the traffic.
You’ll look at the driver.
And then you’ll quietly accept your fate and wrap your arms around a complete stranger’s waist while weaving through Bangkok traffic hoping that you don’t fall off.
Pro tip: don’t hold on to your driver lol. You really don’t need to hold on but if you feel like you do, hold on to the back of the bike!
9. Getting caught in the rain on the back of a bike stuck at the longest intersection light in the world
Thailand has some of the longest intersection lights ever. (If you've ever been stuck at the Maya intersection in Chiang Mai, you know).
You’re on the back of a motorbike. Everything is fine. Then BOOM! The sky opens up.
You’re soaked, your driver is soaked, and somehow the traffic light has decided that now is the perfect time to become the longest red light in human history. And of course, you just got skipped.
So now you're sitting there in the pouring rain, watching everyone else go while you wait for your turn to come back around.
Sabai Sabai tho. Roll with the changes. Buy a rain jacket from 7-Eleven!!!
10. Ordered something “mai pet” and still got absolutely wrecked
You confidently say “mai pet” because you have learned exactly one Thai phrase and you’re going to use it.
Your food arrives.
You take one bite.
Your entire face immediately leaves your body.
Apparently mai pet is more of a suggestion than a legally binding agreement.
11. Experienced your first Thailand stomach betrayal
Everyone told you not to drink the tap water. You were careful. You drank bottled water. You washed your hands. You did everything right.
And somehow, somewhere along the way, your stomach decides it has had enough.
Was it the ice? The street food? The questionable sauce? That one thing you ate at 2 AM?
You'll never know.
Thailand: 1. You: 0.
Unpopular opinion — just get sick at the beginning and call it a day.
12. Watched a 7-Eleven employee heat up your toastie and thought “this is the best thing I’ve ever eaten”
You haven’t truly experienced Thailand until you’ve stumbled into a 7-Eleven at some ungodly hour, picked out a toastie, handed it to the employee, and watched them put it into the little toaster oven for you.
Then they hand it back.
It’s hot.
It’s crispy.
It’s so simple but somehow the greatest meal you’ve ever had.
And yes, you’ll be back tomorrow.
13. Been told the meter isn’t working in the taxi
You get into a taxi. You give them your destination.
They immediately tell you the meter isn’t working. Funny how that happens.
You’re either getting out or agreeing to a price that you already know is going to be wildly higher than the meter would have been.
Either way, welcome to Bangkok.
14. Gotten a Sak Yant tattoo while in Thailand
At some point, the idea of getting a traditional Thai tattoo while actually in Thailand becomes waaaay too tempting.
You start looking into it “just for fun.”
Next thing you know, you’re sitting somewhere wondering how you got here and thinking, well… I guess we’re doing this.
And honestly? Very cool experience.
15. Built a house for the mother of a Thai girl
You went to Thailand for a vacation.
You meet a beautiful girl.
Things got serious…. fast.
Suddenly you’re hearing about her family, her village, her mother, and how much a house would cost.
And somehow, three months later, you’re standing in a field looking at a concrete foundation thinking: “How the hell did we get here?”
16. Been personally victimized by a mosquito
You can use bug spray, wear long pants, sleep with the AC blasting, and can cover yourself in enough mosquito repellent to chemically alter your DNA.
It. does. not. matter.
The mosquito will find you.
And it will bite you specifically on the one tiny patch of exposed skin you somehow forgot existed.
Pro tip: buy the pink mosquito spray from 7-Eleven AND invest in some mosquito bite patches to stop the itching!
17. Had a massage that was basically a full-contact sport
Thailand has some of the cheapest massages you’ll ever find, so obviously you’re going to get one.
You walk in thinking you’re about to have an hour of peaceful relaxation.
Cute little massage shop. Soft music. Maybe some essential oils.
Then an older Thai lady who is approximately 4'10" walks in, cracks her knuckles, and proceeds to absolutely destroy you.
She’s standing on your legs. Pulling your arms. Folding you in half. Somehow using her entire body weight despite weighing about half as much as you do.
And the stamina??? Insane.
You’re 30 minutes in, fighting for your life, and she seems like she could happily do this for another six hours.
You leave feeling like you’ve been hit by a truck, but you only paid 300 baht and somehow you’re already thinking about booking another one tomorrow.
18. Said “how hard can it be?” and rented a scooter
You’ve never ridden a scooter before.
You’ve also never driven on the left side of the road.
But you watched approximately three TikToks about it, so obviously you’re ready.
You rent a scooter, put on a helmet that has definitely seen some things, and confidently pull out into traffic.
For the first five minutes, you’re terrified. For the next five minutes, you’re convinced you’ve basically become a professional.
And then a dog runs into the road and you suddenly remember that you have absolutely no idea what you’re doing.
BOOM. Now you have your second “Thai Tattoo”.
Seriously though, please don't do this if you've never ridden before.
19. The National Anthem Freeze
You’re minding your own business, walking through a train station, park, or shopping center when suddenly the Thai national anthem starts blasting out of nowhere.
And then… everyone stops.
Like, everyone.
People who were walking? Stopped. People who were talking? Quiet. Everyone just stands there respectfully while you’re looking around like, “Umm… am I supposed to do something?”
You quickly realize you’re the only person still moving and awkwardly come to a stop too.
A minute later, the song ends, everyone immediately goes back to whatever they were doing — and so do you.
20. Going up the escalator to departures at BKK
You know that feeling.
You’ve survived the trip. You’ve eaten everything. You’ve sweated through your clothes. You’ve bought things you absolutely did not need and had the best time ever.
And then you get on that escalator at BKK and see the departures level.
Suddenly you’re sad.
Thailand is over.
You’re already thinking about when you can come back.
